Volleyball falls to Cumberlands 3-0

Williamsburg, Ky. – Shawnee State volleyball lost their fourth straight match on Tuesday night, falling to Cumberlands (Ky.) 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-16). 

The first set was all Cumberlands as the Patriots would put Shawnee State in an early 12-7 deficit. The Bears would be unable to mount a comeback, with Cumberlands getting 18 kills in the set with only three errors. SSU would lose set one 25-15.

The second set would see Shawnee State get off to a hot start, putting the Patriots into an early 11-3 hole. However, Cumberlands would come back to within one point, at 15-14, and the two teams would trade points down the stretch. SSU would take a late 25-24 lead on a Christina Shelton (SR/Blue Creek, Ohio) kill, but Cumberlands would respond with three straight points to take the set 27-25.

The third set would be more like the first as Cumberlands would take an early lead and not relent. The Patriots would storm out to an 11-4 lead over Shawnee State early, and would fend off the Bears down the stretch to cruise to a 25-16 third set win and a 3-0 match victory.

Emily McKibben (FR/Williamsburg, Ohio) and Brianna Wiget (SR/Piketon, Ohio) would share the kills lead for Shawnee State, with both getting 10. Deanna Smith (SR/Riverview, MI) would get 29 assists, and Stacia Martin (SR/Indianapolis, Indiana) had 18 digs. Tyanna Smith (JR/Bowling Green, Ohio) would get six kills and a game-high three blocks. Jessica Severs led Cumberlands' attack with a game-high 15 kills.

The loss drops Shawnee State's record to 6-12 on the season and 1-5 in the Mid-South Conference. Cumberlands improves to 9-8 and 2-4 in the league, taking sole possession of sixth place over SSU.

Shawnee State will look to get back on track on Saturday, October 7 when the travel to Marietta, Georgia to take on Life University. First serve is set for 1:00pm.
