Baseball splits doubleheader with Ave Maria

Bradenton, Fla. – Shawnee State baseball split a doubleheader on Wednesday, falling in game one 6-4 but rallying for an 11-9 victory in game two.

In game One, the Gyrenes opened the scoring in the top of the first tallying five runs. The first run was scored on an error followed by two RBI singles, an RBI double, and a fielder's choice groundout. Shawnee State responded in the bottom of inning one when Sam Gerhold (SR/Shelton, Washington) scored on a wild pitch and JT Boggs (SR/South Shore, Kentucky) laced a two RBI double down the left field line, bringing the score to 5-3.

 In the second inning of game one, Ave Maria scored an insurance run when Matt Wiles singled through the left side of the infield, allowing Alex Perez to score. In Shawnee States half of the second inning Dalton Phillips (JR/Hastings, Michigan) singled through the right side of the infield allowing Sam Gerhold to score. After a scoring outburst in the first two innings neither team crossed the plate again as Shawnee State fell by a final score of 6-4.

 In game two, Shawnee State struck first, Levi Jones (JR/Millersburg, Ohio) and JT Boggs both had RBI singles giving the Bears a quick 2-0 lead. SSU would add to that lead in the very next inning. Dalton Phillips hit a two RBI double to left field, followed by Levi Jones who laced an RBI double into left field. The Bears concluded the inning with an RBI triple from JT Boggs extending the lead to 6-0.

 The Gyrenes began to rally in the third inning, scoring four runs on a walk with the bases loaded, a hit batter and a two RBI double from Steven Valentine. SSU would add more runs in the fourth inning when Danny McGuire (FR/Cleveland, Ohio) hit an RBI single and Christian Helton (JR/Lexington, Kentucky) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Casey Claflin (SR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) scored on a passed ball and Shawnee State held a lead of 9-4.

 Ave Maria scored a run in the fourth on a single, then they would go on to tie the game in the fifth inning after two RBI singles, Ryan Keegan hit a three RBI single evening the score at 9-9. Shawnee State closed out the game in the final inning of play when Christian Helton scored on a wild pitch and Joseph Campos (FR/Orlando, Florida) hit an RBI single scoring Seth Clement (FR/Kissimmee, Florida). Shawnee State won by a final score of 11-9.

 In game one, Kyle Naylor picked up the win on throwing three innings and surrendering one run on three hits and one strikeout. Alex Walker (JR/Hopkinsville, Kentucky) was credited with the loss, pitching five innings surrendering nine hits and six runs, only one of them earned. Andrew Giddens earned the save. In game two Sam Gerhold was given the win, allowing nine runs on 10 hits through four innings of work. Andrew Steele earned the loss, allowing two runs and four hits through one inning of work.

 The split series moves Shawnee State to 9-8 on the season, while Ave Maria is now 10-19.

 Shawnee State baseball returns home this weekend, Saturday March 10 with a double header against Ohio-Chillicothe. First pitch is set for 1:00pm.
