Softball defeats Martin Luther and Carlow

Titusville, Fla. – Shawnee State softball picked up a pair of wins at the Cocoa Beach Spring Training Classic on Wednesday, defeating Martin Luther (Minn.) 7-2 and Carlow (Pa.) 11-0.

Game One

Shawnee State grabbed an early lead against Martin Luther, scoring two in the bottom of the first. Michal Cunningham (SO/Wheelersburg, Ohio) would lead off the game by getting hit by a pitch. Katlyn Gleich (JR/Grove City, Ohio) would single to put two on, and a passed ball moved the runners into scoring position. With two outs, Stacy Trenholm (FR/Lancaster, Ohio) would single to drive both runners in, putting Shawnee State up 2-0 early.

The Bears would score four runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead. Cunningham would reach again to lead off the inning, punching a single and stealing second. Marisa Brown (JR/Liberty Township, Ohio) would single, moving Cunningham to third. Pinch runner Victoria Bevington (SO/London, Ohio) stole second, and Kayla Koch (SR/Lucasville, Ohio) would double in both runners to put SSU up 4-0. Stacy Trenholm would then hit a home run in the next at-bat, putting Shawnee State up 6-0 after five.

Martin Luther would rally for a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Brett Burger would reach on an error and reach second on a passed ball. Burger then moved to third on a Rebecca Doering groundout. With two outs, Audrey Timm would double home Burger. Afte ra single by Megan Lemke, Timm would score on a double steal to cut the SSU lead to 6-2. However, Megan Shupert-Martin (JR/West Portsmouth, Ohio) would score on Marisa Brown's single in the bottom of the sixth to push the SSU lead back out to five runs, and give SSU a 7-2 win.

McKenzie Whittaker (JR/McDermott, Ohio) go the win, allowing no runs on one hit in five innings, striking out four. Morgan Palubicki allowed six runs on eight hits in four and a third innings pitched to take the loss.

Game Two

Shawnee State would run rule Carlow in five innings, and started by taking a first inning lead. Victoria Bevington and Marisa Brown would hit back-to-back doubles to put SSU up 1-0.

The Bears then scored three in the top of the second. Stacy Trenholm would lead off the inning with a triple and score on Tatum Wise's single to give SSU a 2-0 lead. Bailey Kemp (FR/Circleville, Ohio) would hit a single with one out to score Wise. After an error, Michal Cunningham would single home Kemp to put SSU up 4-0 after two innings.

Shawnee State then scored two runs in the top of the third. Kayla Koch singled to lead off the inning, and would get to second when Trenholm walked. A passed ball would move the runners over, and both would score on an error by Kelsey Geyer to give Shawnee State a 6-0 lead. The Bears then tacked on five unearned runs in the top of the fifth to clinch the five-inning win.

Tatum Wise got the win, allowing no runs on three hits in five innings, striking out four. Nicole Hall allowed four runs on six hits in two innings to take the loss.

The wins improve Shawnee State to 7-2 on the season.

Shawnee State softball continues the Cocoa Beach Spring Training Classic on Thursday when they take on Ave Maria (Fla.) in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1:30pm.
