Volleyball Schedule

PORTSMOUTH – Shawnee State Volleyball Head Coach Susan Shelton has announced her team's 2012 schedule.

Shelton enters her second season at the helm of the volleyball program after serving as the interim head coach during the 2011 season. The 2012 schedule features a total of eight homes games, including the chance to host a Mid-South Crossover and an additional tri-meet throughout the season.

The Bears open 2012 on the road at the Earlybird Tournament (Aug. 24-25) at Michigan-Dearborn. After the opening tournament, Shawnee State will have its first chance to play in front of the home crowd on Sept. 5 when it opens up Mid-South Conference play against the University of Rio Grande.

After the home opener, Shawnee State will be back on the road for three matches at the Rumpke Invitational hosted by Georgetown College (Sept. 7-8). The Bears will then be back in their home gym for the second conference game of the season against the University of Pikeville on Sept. 10. The Bears will then head back on the road for the next three weekends. The road trip begins with a tri-match at Point Park College with Midway College on Sept. 15. The second stop will take the Bears to the Cumberland Classic (Sept. 21-22) for four matches before wrapping up the three weekend trip after three more matches in the Mid-South Crossover hosted by Georgetown College (Sept. 28-29).

Volleyball will open the month of October with a home tri-match on Oct. 2 which features a Mid-South matchup with Bluefield College that will be followed with a non-conference matchup against Mount Vernon Nazarene College. After the home tri-match, a stretch of four straight road games begins with a non-conference tri-match on Oct. 6 at Cedarville University with Ursuline College. A pair of Mid-South opponents, the University of Rio Grande (Oct. 9) and the University of Pikeville (Oct. 16) round out the road trip.

Shawnee State will then have the chance to host its own Mid-South Crossover on Oct. 19-20. The Bears open that weekend with a single match on Friday against Campbellsville. The next day brings the University of the Cumberlands and the defending Mid-South Champions Lindsey Wilson to close out the weekend. The final tournament before the Mid-South Conference Tournament will see the team travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan and take on Mount Vernon Nazarene College and Cornerstone University (Oct. 26) before finishing the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic with Grace College and Marygrove College (Oct. 27).

The Bears will then close out the regular season with two final conference matches. On Oct. 30, volleyball welcomes UVA-Wise to their home courts for the final home match of the season. The team will then close its regular season campaign with a trip to Bluefield College. The Mid-South Conference Tournament will be held in Frankfort, Kentucky this season on November 9-10.

Volleyball went 11-26 last season, including a 5-6 record that qualified the team for the Conference Tournament where it was eliminated in the opening round.
