MONTREAT, N.C. – Baseball picked up a split Wednesday afternoon at Montreat. The Bears (11-9) tallied a 6-2 victory in the opening game, while Montreat rallied for an 11-2 win in game two.
Dalton Tinsley (JR, Kokomo, Ind.) moved in the sixth hole in the lineup during the Bears' 6-2 victory and paced the SSU offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Both he and Nolan West (SO, Olivehurst, Calif.) would homer in the victory. West added a 3-for-3 day at the plate with his solo home run. In addition to his long ball, Tinsley scored two runs and drove in two runs. Brady Hightchew (SO, Newport, Ky.) and Brady Page (JR, Las Vegas, Nev.) also finished with two hits in the victory.
Taylor Smith (SO, Crestview Hills, Ky.) picked up the victory as he pitched the first four innings of the seven-inning contest. He allowed four hits and two runs (one earned). He also struck out one batter in what was his first appearance of the save. Steven Easterling (FR, Ironton, Ohio) then pitched a perfect final three innings, while striking out one, to pick up his first career save with the Bears.
In addition to the pair of long balls from West and Tinsley, the Bears finished with five extra base hits in game one. During game two, it was Montreat that would get the power going with three home runs in the contest en route to the 11-2 victory. The Bears got just three hits in game two as Montreat starter Matt Phillips pitched five innings before giving way to his bullpen.
The Bears will now head to Lebanon, Tenn. and Cumberland University for a three-game series against the No. 10 and MSC Preseason favorite Bulldogs. That series gets underway Friday at 3 p.m.
