The Shawnee State Men's Basketball Team edged the Central State Marauders, 104-103, in an overtime thriller at Central State University on Friday evening. Shawnee State improves to 3-1 on the season.
Central State controlled the first half shooting with 53% from the field with the Bears managing to stay in the game. A layup by junior Ian Nixson at the buzzer cut the Marauders lead to 51-43 at the half.
In an electrifying atmosphere, Shawnee State took advantage of the game's intensity and climbed back into the game in the second half. Shawnee State took the lead with 10 minutes left, before Central State reclaimed it late in a back-and-forth battle. With just over two minutes remaining Shawnee State took another lead and held it for the rest of regulation. In the final seconds, Central State scored on a baseline lob to knot the game at 94-94 and forced the game into overtime.
In overtime, Shawnee State was able to edge out the Marauders 104-103 for the victory.
Shawnee State out rebounded Central State 54-36 in the game which made the difference.
"That's a fantastic college basketball game; the environment, effort, execution, level of play was outstanding," said Bears' Head Coach Jeff Hamilton. "Both teams made great plays and I couldn't be more proud of our guys and their focus throughout the game."
Shawnee State was led by junior Jeremy Bennington. Bennington shot 7-for-14 from behind the arc en route to a career-high 37 points. He also pulled down five rebounds. Junior Mark Bryant added a double-double, 20 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Tyler Morgan tallied his fourth double-double with 19 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds. Nixson gave the Bears quality minutes as he finished with 10 points, five assists, three steals while committing only one turnover in 43 minutes played.
Coach Hamilton adds, "The forwards were the difference as they made big play after big play, rebounding and scoring. Morgan was relentless on the glass, while Bryant kept making winning plays throughout the game. Bennington kept finding ways to score and Nixson's floor generalship was a huge factor as he put his team in a position to win. It was a great team effort and everyone was a contributor. The bench was into the game and gave great minutes and energy!"
Greg Rice led the Marauders with 31 points.
