PORTSMOUTH – Baseball swept the Mid-South Conference weekly awards as Derek Moore (FR/Wheelersburg, Ohio) was named the MSC Pitcher of the Week, while Dustin Bickmeyer (SR/O'Fallon, Mo.) was the MSC Player of the Week. Moore wins the MSC Pitcher of the Week for the third time in his freshman campaign. He is the only pitcher in the conference to win this award on three occasions. Bickmeyer wins his first career Player of the Week honor.
With the Bears sweeping both honors, this marks just the third time in program history that this has occurred. The only other time it happened in the Mid-South Conference came a year ago when Jake Lankheit (SO/Covington, Ky.) and Jordan Williams each earned the honor on March 4, 2013. Danny Gesick and Andrew Carter were named the AMC Player and Pitcher of the Week on April 26, 2010. For the conference, this marks the first award period where one team has swept both honors this season.
During this past week, Moore made a pair of starts. His first start on the mound came in a controlled outing as he pitched just the first inning against NCAA Division I Morehead State. In his outing against the DI foe, Moore retired all three batters that he faced and struck out one. In his typical weekend start against Pikeville, Moore went the full nine innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters. He scattered seven hits and did not walk a batter as Pikeville scored just one unearned run.
The only run more allowed during his Friday start came with runners on first and third when the Bears threw down to try and nab a running stealing second base. However, that throw would get away and allow the runner on third to score before Moore got a swinging strikeout that same at-bat to avoid further damage.
For the year, Moore is 9-1 on the season with a 1.48 ERA in 97 innings. He has started 13 games with his two starts this week. His complete game effort against Pikeville was his sixth of the season as the Bears won with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, taking the opening game of the series 2-1.
Moore leads the Mid-South Conference in wins and earned run average and is tied for the conference lead in opponent's batting average (.203). He ranks third in the MSC with 66 strikeouts. Nationally, Moore is ninth in wins and 18th in ERA.
Bickmeyer earns his first career honor after batting .636 over the past week. His 7-for-11 week included three different multi-hit games. Bickmeyer started the week with back-to-back two-hit games against DI Morehead State and Pikeville. After going 0-for-1 with a walk a sacrifice bunt in the lone game he did not record a hit, Bickmeyer went 3-for-3 with a triple in the series finale against Pikeville.
The Bears' senior also drew two walks for the week and drove in three runs. He scored a run in the game vs. Morehead State and the series finale against Pikeville. Bickmeyer is currently batting .261 with 14 RBI on the year. He is getting on base at a .382 clip so far this season. In the field, Bickmeyer has thrown out 14 of the 39 runners that have tried to steal on him.
Baseball will wrap up its home slate this Wednesday with a 4 p.m. single game against Ohio-Lancaster. The regular season wraps up its final weekend this Friday and Saturday as the Bears head to St. Catharine for three games.
