PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Baseball) – Former Shawnee State pitcher John Rypel has been named the head coach of Calvin College, an NCAA Division III program in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Rypel played for Shawnee State in 2005, when he appeared in 11 contests as a reliever, the most of any hurler out of the bullpen. The right-hander threw 15.1 innings, striking out 13 and walking just six.
A Middleburg Heights, Ohio, native, Rypel joins Calvin following a four year stint at Gordon College. During his time there, he twice recorded the most wins in program history, taking a team that went 8-28 in his first season in 2011, to a 19-17 record in 2014.
Rypel played at Cuyahoga Community College and King College before arriving at Shawnee State, and earned his undergraduate degree at Carson-Newman University. Prior to becoming the head coach at Gordon, he was the head junior varsity coach at Maryville College, as well as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
