ST. CATHARINE, Ky. (Men's Basketball) – Devon Carter (JR/Clayton, Ohio)'s bucket with one second remaining handed the Shawnee State men's basketball team a 64-62 victory over St. Catharine College to give the Bears a Mid-South Conference victory in the final contest of the season on Saturday afternoon at Lourdes Hall.
The Bears trailed by three points with 1:27 remaining in the game, but Hudson connected for three at the 51-second mark to knot the contest at 62. On the ensuing St. Catharine possession, Hudson forced a turnover leading to Carter's game-winner.
Hudson finished the contest with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He finished 5-of-6 from behind the arc. Sean Elliott (JR/Canal Winchester, Ohio) and Nick Tingle (JR/Clayton, Ohio) each added eight points, while Ethan Moffatt (JR/Somerville, Tenn.) notched a game-high 10 rebounds. Lorenzo Dewberry led the Patriots with 17 points.
After an opening bucket from Tingle, St. Catharine jumped out on the Bears to grab a 14-6 advantage six minutes into the game. The Patriots extended the lead to as many as 12 and never trailed again in the first half. At the break, the home squad held a 33-25 advantage.
It took more than 12 minutes in the second half for SSU to work back into the contest, but a bucket from Frederick Moore (FR/Cincinnati, Ohio) at the 7:43 mark cut the SCC lead down to two. With 5:15 on the clock, Moffatt connected to give the Bears a one-point advantage.
The two squads exchanged leads back and forth over the final five minutes, knotting the score on three separate occasions, while swapping the lead five times.
The Bears went 24-of-54 from the field in the game, connecting on 44.4 percent of shots. The visiting squad won the rebounding battle 39-32. St. Catharine was limited to just 42.6 percent shooting, while making just 9-of-18 from the free throw line.
Shawnee State begins postseason play on Thursday, as the No. 9 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament. The Bears will face eighth-seeded Cumberland University in a play-in game to determine who will play top-seeded University of Pikeville. Thursday's contest is slated to tip-off at noon ET.
