PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Men's and Women's Basketball) – The Mid-South Conference men's and women's basketball tournament brackets are set, the conference office announced Saturday upon the conclusion of regular season play.
The Shawnee State men's team – who represent the No. 9 seed – will open the slate versus eighth-seeded Cumberland University at noon on Thursday. The winner of this game advances to face top-seeded University of Pikeville on Friday at 2 p.m.
In two matchups this season, Cumberland defeated SSU twice – winning the first game in Portsmouth on a buzzer-beating three before winning in Lebanon, Tenn., 67-63. Devon Carter (JR/Clayton, Ohio) went for a team-high 14 points in the first game, including hitting three free throws in the closing seconds to set up the final shot. In the second game, Sean Elliott (JR/Canal Winchester, Ohio) scored a game-high 21 points.
On the women's side, SSU is the No. 3 seed, and will face off against sixth-seeded Georgetown College at 8 p.m. on Thursday. The winner of this contest will move on to play the winner of No. 2 seed Lindsey Wilson and No. 7 seed University of the Cumberlands on Saturday.
The women beat Georgetown, 68-59, in Portsmouth, but saw a 16-point second half lead on the road dissipate into a 80-71 overtime loss. Shavon Robinson (SR/Canton, Ohio) scored a combined 40 points in the two games – scoring 20 in each contest – and Ali Zieverink (JR/West Chester, Ohio) did the same with 28 in the first game and 12 in the second.
Semifinal matchups are set for both the men's and women's sides on Saturday, with the women's games scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and the men set to tip-off at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The championship games for each will be played on Sunday.
