Somerville, Tenn. (Baseball) – Shawnee State baseball took away two wins over the weekend in three games beginning with Indiana University Southeast on the campus of Belmont University on Friday. On Saturday, the Bears traveled to Somerville, Tenn., for games versus Indiana Tech and Brescia University.
After a 10-2 defeat at the hands of Indiana Tech, SSU closed the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Brescia.
The Bears had strong pitching in their two victories, allowing just four runs in their two winning contests. However, the team allowed 10 runs in their lone loss. SSU would return home with a record of 2-1 over the weekend.
Shawnee would finish with a 5-4 victory on Friday. In the first contest, Derek Moore (SO/Wheelersburg, Ohio) started on the mound, pitching five innings, allowing no earned runs to go along with 11 strikeouts, earning him the win. Brandon Bonar (JR/Chillicothe, Ohio) would also pitch two innings while allowing just two hits. The team only attained three hits in the bout, but their defense played well enough to hold the Grenadiers to just four runs.
It was the Bears to score first in the third inning, and they held on to the lead for the rest of the game. Blake Maines (SO/Burlington, Ky.) managed to score two runs in the game, and Conner Wilson (JR/San Diego, Calif.) recorded the team's lone RBI.
SSU experienced a tough loss in the first game on Saturday, the final score reading 10-2. Clay Tefft (FR/Wauseon, Ohio) got the start and would stay on for three innings in which he would allow seven earned runs. Shawnee managed six hits in the contest, but only converted them to two runs by Maines and Andrew Vanthournout (FR/Bowling Green, Ky.). Wilson would knock in both runs in the first, and Shawnee was held scoreless the rest of the game.
Things turned around the Shawnee's third and final contest against Brescia. The Bears put Cody Strayer (JR/Worthington, Ohio) on the mound to start, who allowed no earned runs in five innings with seven strikeouts. Bonar and Jacob Waters (JR/DeWitt, Mich.) would follow on the mound, each pitching an inning and completing the shutout.
The Bears would win the final game 3-0, with RBIs generated by Dalton Tinsley (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) and Matt Dvorscak (FR/Whiting, Ind.). Shawnee won the hitting contest, recording six to just four from the Bearcats. The Bears showed discipline in the box, earning eight walks.
Shawnee baseball will again be on the road for their next contests. They will travel to Pulaski, Tenn., where they will be hosted by Martin Methodist. The team will play one game on March 6 at 1 p.m., and are scheduled for a doubleheader on the following day, the first of which will take place at noon.
