PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Baseball) – The Shawnee State baseball team finally found an offensive prowess, breaking out for nine runs in the final two innings to turn a 3-0 deficit into an 11-4 victory over West Virginia Tech in non-conference action on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Park.
The Bears were led by Blake Maine, who knocked in three runs and scored a pair in a 2-for-5 afternoon, while Connor Wilson knocked in a pair of his own. Wilson and Jacob Waters (JR/DeWitt, Mich.) each collected three hits in the game.
Shawnee State was held scoreless through four innings, while the Golden Bears built a 3-0 advantage. WVUT got on the board in the first when Carlos Diaz singled home a run. Another run came home on a double play ball which put the visitors up 2-0.
In the third, West Virginia Tech rallied with two outs, getting a hit then a walk before a Cody Miller single knocked in another run.
Clay Tefft (FR/Wauseon, Ohio) came on in relief for the Bears in the third and pitched the next 4.1 innings scoreless to keep Shawnee State in the game. Tefft earned the victory, allowing just one hit while walking none and striking out a pair.
A Blake Maines (SO/Burlington, Ky.) groundout which plated Mitchell Lendenski (JR/Loveland, Ohio) cut the gap to two in the fifth inning, and Mauro Olivarria (JR/San Diego, Calif.) scored on an error in the sixth to make it 3-2.
In the seventh, SSU plated five runs on six hits, capitalizing on a pair of errors to take the lead. Wilson knocked in a run with a double to left, and Mason Wisner (SR/Bay Village, Ohio) knocked in a run with a bunt single in the frame. Dalton Tinsley (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) also knocked in a run with a sac-fly and Drew Haislop (SO/Oak Hill, Ohio) knocked in a run.
The eighth proved to be add-on for the Bears as the club scored another four runs on three hits and an error. Maines provided the big knock in the inning with a two-RBI double in the frame.
The Bears are back in action with a Mid-South Conference series currently slated for a Friday opener with the University of Pikeville. SSU will close the weekend with a twinbill versus UPike on Saturday.
