PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Baseball) – Jacob Waters (JR/DeWitt, Mich.)' single down the left field line in the seventh inning of a 1-1 game sent the Shawnee State baseball team to a 2-1 victory over No. 16 Campbellsville University, as the squads split a doubleheader – the Tigers won game one, 9-4 – in Mid-South Conference play on Sunday afternoon at Branch Rickey Park.
Waters' walkoff single was set up by a leadoff single from Andrew Vanthournout (FR/Bowling Green, Ky.), who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Travis Bingham (FR/Versailles, Ky.). Back-to-back strikeouts from reliever Logan Truex set the stage for the two-out heroics from the senior second baseman.
The late-game stage was set by a masterful performance on the hill from SSU starter Mike Watson (FR/Niles, Ohio), who went seven complete, allowing just a single run on four hits. Watson struck out three and walked two en route to the victory.
His lone mistake came one pitch away from victory in the top of the seventh. Leading, 1-0 and with two strikes on Campbellsville slugger Alex Kline, Watson left a pitch up in the zone, which Kline launched over the center field wall, tying the contest headed to the bottom of the last inning.
SSU took a one-run advantage in the third inning, set up on a walk from Waters. After the one-out walk, Blake Maines (SO/Burlington, Ky.) ripped a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third, and Conner Wilson (JR/San Diego, Calif.) grounded out to short, scoring the first run of the game.
Game one was a different story, as Campbellsville exploded for nine runs on 12 hits in the game. The Tigers plated two runs in the second, one in the four and three in the fifth to break out to a 6-0 advantage. Following a run in the top of the sixth to make it 7-0, SSU scored four unanswered to get back in the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Waters singled home Mike Watson and JT Boggs (FR/South Shore, Ky.) added an RBI single to plate Mitchell Lendenski (JR/Loveland, Ohio). In the seventh, Waters added a two RBI single, as well – his second and third runs batted in during the contest.
Already with a three-run advantage, Ricky McColloch lifted a two-run home run over the left field wall to put the game out of reach for Campbellsville.
Cody Strayer (JR/Worthington, Ohio) took the loss in the game, going four innings while allowing six earned runs on six hits and five walks. Clay Tefft (FR/Wauseon, Ohio) and Ethan Moffatt (JR/Somerville, Tenn.) combined to pitch three scoreless innings in the middle of the contest. Nick Morehead earned the victory in 6.1 innings of work for CU.
The Bears now head off for a six-game road stretch, beginning with three non-conference mid-week games. SSU opens with a doubleheader versus the University of Rio Grande on Tuesday, slated to begin at 3 p.m.
