PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Baseball) – Shawnee State surrendered a pair of big innings, as Lindsey Wilson College plated six runs in the fourth inning and five more in the seventh en route to a 13-3, seven-inning victory to open the final series of Mid-South Conference regular-season play on Thursday afternoon at Branch Rickey Park.
Derek Moore (SO/Wheelersburg, Ohio) took his sixth loss of the season, surrendering 13 runs (nine earned) on 17 hits. The starter did not walk a batter and struck out one in 6.1 innings. Ethan Moffatt (JR/Somerville, Tenn.) closed out the final two-thirds of an inning, walking one and not allowing a hit.
After scoring single runs in both the first and third innings, Lindsey Wilson broke the game open with six runs on six hits and an error in the fourth frame. All but two of the runs were unearned in the frame.
Brandon Munoz knocked in the first run with a two-out single, and Alex Bautista did the same with a single of his own. With two runners aboard Edgar Lebron lifted a fly ball to the outfield which was misplayed to bring two more home. Victor Nazario and doubled to score another, and Fabian Chirino closed the scoring with a single, pushing the score to 8-0 after four innings.
Shawnee State cut the deficit to five with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Drew Haislop (SO/Oak Hill, Ohio) led off the inning with a single, and Mike Watson (FR/Niles, Ohio) doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third.
Following a Mitch Lendenski free pass via HBP to load the bases, Matt Dvorscak (FR/Whiting, Ind.) knocked in the first run with a sac fly. Blake Maines (SO/Burlington, Ky.) added a double which crashed off the right field wall to score two more runs.
Both squads went scoreless in the sixth, but the Blue Raiders came back with a five-run frame in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 10. Narario, Chirino and Daryl Blaskovich opened the inning with three straight singles, and Ryan Harper knocked in a pair with a single to left. Munoz added a two-RBI single to push the lead to 12-3.
With two away in the frame and runners on the corners, Lindsey Wilson executed a double steal that saw Bautista steal second and, upon the throw down from the catcher, Munoz scamper home, pushing the lead to 13-3.
LWC starter Ryan Hartman worked around a single from Dvorscak, inducing a game-ending 4-6-3 double play, ending the contest two innings early via the 10-run rule. Hartman earned his eighth win of the season in the complete-game victory.
The Bears and Blue Raiders are back in action Friday for a doubleheader to close out regular-season play. The twinbill at Branch Rickey Field will represent Senior Day for a duo of SSU players, Dalton Tinsley (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) and Mason Wisner (SR/Bay Village, Ohio).
First pitch is slated for noon, with Senior Day ceremonies beginning just before the start of the first contest.
