COLUMBIA, Ky. (Men's Basketball) – With 1:25 remaining on the clock, trailing by three, the Bears were able to flip the script and come out with a win thanks to crucial baskets by Frederick Moore (SO/Cincinnati, Ohio) and Ethan Moffatt (SR/Somerville, Tenn.), as Shawnee State defeated the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders by a score of 56-55 on Saturday afternoon at Biggers Sports Center.
Shawnee State came out of the gate slow, as Lindsey Wilson opened the game on an 11-3 run, but thanks to five points from Markins and a triple form Yates the Bears cut the deficit back to four with 9:58 remaining in the first half.
Late in the first half the Bears took a lead of 24-22, thanks to a field goal form Dante Dunston (SR/Dallas, Texas), the Bears' first lead of the game. Lindsey Wilson answered taking back the lead with 1:51 remaining, but as the first half came to a close Moffatt was able to bring the score even again. At the half the score was tied at 26.
After the half, the Blue Raiders took an early 35-30 lead, but Shawnee State answered by going on an 11-point run and jumped out to a 10-point lead with 10 minutes left in the game. Yates contributed six points to the run. The Bears saw their lead disappear with 3:44 remaining in the contest, as they fell behind by a score of 51-48.
In the final moments of the contest Shawnee State trailed by a score of 55-52, but the Bears showed their resilience, as Moore converted from the field with just 56 seconds remaining. Lindsey Wilson tried to answer, but the shot was denied by Yates. Moffatt's basket came with 11 seconds remaining, putting the Bears up by one. On the other end Yates came up with another crucial defensive stop, blocking the final shot of the game and leading the Bears to a 56-55 victory.
With this victory the bears move back to .500 with an overall record of 13-13, and 7-7 in Mid-South Conference play.
The Shawnee State men's basketball team returns home this Thursday to take on Life University. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium.
