WILIAMSBURG, KY (Baseball) – The Bears were eyeing a sweep in the final game of the three game series, but finished just short falling by a score of 9-3 to the Cumberlands on Saturday afternoon at James Keelty Field.
It looked as if the game was going to be a tight contest through the first two scoreless frames. Shawnee State was the first to break through, scoring the first run of the game on a fielder's choice put in play by Mitchell Lendenski (SR/Loveland, Ohio). Through three innings of play SSU was in front 1-0.
The Cumberlands began to pull away in the fourth scoring three runs then adding another six runs over the next three innings. The Bears tried to rally back in the sixth inning scoring two. One of the runs came on a bunt single from Freeman. SSU was not able to close the gap, losing by a final score of 9-3.
Lendenski finished 2-for-5 with an RBI, while the Bears dropped to an even record of 3-3 in Mid-South Conference play.
The Bears return home Tuesday to face off against Bluefield College. Game one of the doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Branch Rickey Park.
