Portsmouth, Ohio (Baseball) – Game one involved an outpouring of offense for Shawnee State, as they had a six run inning to go along with three three-run innings propelling them to a 15-5 victory. Game two was a close contest, SSU rallied late to tie the game and an errant throw allowed the Bears to score the game winning run in extra innings defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday afternoon at Branch Rickey Park.
In game one, Brandon Reaman (JR/Dayton, Ohio) finished with an outstanding five RBIs. Game two featured a strong performance from Nick Rose (FR/Olentangy, Ohio) with two RBIs and a lights out performance out of the bullpen from Brandon Bonar (SR/Chillicothe, Ohio) going four innings, striking out three and not allowing a run.
Shawnee State jumped out to a three-run lead after Matt Dvorscak (SO/Whiting, Ind.)'s RBI single and Reaman's two-RBI single. The visitors were able to grab a run of their own in the top of the third, but after three innings of play, the Bears were in front by a score of 3-1.
Reaman collected his third RBI in the fourth inning, while SSU put up another three-run inning. The Bears put the game out of reach with a six run inning in the fifth. The runs came via RBIs from Reaman, Zachariah Freeman (JR/Richmond, Texas), Connor Kindred (FR/Elizabethtown, Ky.), Rose and Chase Thurber (FR/Andover, Ohio). Shawnee State coasted to a 15-5 victory.
Mount Vernon struck first in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. In SSU's half of the third they responded with four runs of their own, two of those runs came from Rose's two-RBI double. Through the first three frames, Shawnee State led 4-2.
Mount Vernon took the lead in the middle innings thanks to a one-run fourth inning and a four-run fifth inning. Freeman's RBI in the sixth brought SSU closer and Thurber's RBI sent them into extra innings. The Bears had opportunities, but were unsuccessful until in the bottom of the ninth when Blake Marshall (FR/Lexington, Ky.) laid down a bunt that forced an errant throw. Dvorscak took advantage and scored leading SSU to an 8-7 victory.
Bonar picked up his second win to move to 2-0 and Clay Tefft (SO/Wauseon, Ohio) earned the game-one victory making his record 1-3.
The Bears have a conference matchup this Friday against St. Catharine. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Branch Rickey Park.
