PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Baseball) – In game one Josh Eplin (JR/Streator, Ill.) was dominant pitching a complete game as SSU won 4-2. In game two the SSU offense was unable to battle, falling 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at Branch Rickey Park.
Eplin finished the game going all nine innings surrendering only four hits and two runs, while striking out three. Conner Wilson (SR/San Diego, Calif.) finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Nick Rose (FR/Olentangy, Ohio) and Brandon Reaman (JR/Dayton, Ohio) each had an RBI. In game two, Rose, Wilson and Zachariah Freeman (JR/Richmond, Texas) all had an RBI. Knittel was charged with the loss.
Wilson's RBI single to left field opened up the scoring for the Bears, this was followed up by an RBI from Rose. Saint Catharine pushed a run of their own across in the top of the third inning, but Wilson answered clubbing another RBI. Through three frames of work Shawnee State was in front by a score of 3-1.
In the fifth inning the visiting Patriots picked up another run, but once again SSU answered, this time in the form of a Reaman home run. This proved to be all Eplin needed as he cruised to his second victory of the season with a 4-2 victory.
The Patriots struck early in game two, scoring one run in the first inning, then three more in the top of the second. SSU retaliated with a two run inning of their own, when Rose homered and Freeman laced an RBI single into center field. After three innings of play SSU was behind 4-2.
Two runs crossed the plate in Saint Catharine's half of the fourth. Shawnee State grabbed a run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI double from Wilson. The Patriots scored another run in the sixth inning to close the door and grab a 7-3 victory over Shawnee State.
In game two, Clay Tefft (SO/Wauseon, Ohio) provided two strong innigs of relief striking out three batters and not allowing a run or hit.
The Bears will return to action Wednesday in a two game set vs Point Park University. Game one is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Branch Rickey Park.
