LEBANON, TN (Tennis) – Cumberland University came into Saturdays match ranked 14th. The Phoenix showed why they area perenially top 25 program, defeating the Shawnee State tennis team, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Tommy Gray Memorial Tennis Courts.
Doubles play opened with Shawnee State's Molly Richard's and Katy Singer (FR/Lucasville, Ohio) facing off against the elite second-ranked duo of Angelica Sepulveda and Tarsha de Souza, who claimed the victory for the Phoenix, 8-0. The next two Shawnee State doubles teams suffered the same fate, falling 8-0 in the other two match-ups.
In singles play Richards fell to the 14th ranked Sepulveda 6-0, 6-0. Singer and Caleigh O'Neil (FR/Greenup, Ky.) fell in similar 6-0 fashion. Mara McGee (SO/Baltimore, Ohio) was able to break through for SSU briefly, but was defeated by a final score of 6-0, 6-1.
SSU will return home to take on Campbellsville University on Friday. The first match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at the Dr. William E Daehler Tennis Center.
