BLUEFIELD, Va. (Baseball) – Shawnee State scored six runs in the final three innings, erasing a four run deficit to earn a mid-week victory, 7-5, over Bluefield College on Tuesday afternoon at Bowen Field.
The Bears (18-29) took advantage of three hits and two Bluefield errors in the seventh inning to make it a one-run game with two innings remaining. With runners on first and third, Christian Helton (FR/Lexington, Ky.) took advantage of an error to plate the first run of the inning, as Andrew Dito (JR/Loraine, Ohio) scampered home.
Andrew Vanthournout (SO/Bowling Green, Ky.) then lifted a sac fly to center to score Blake Marshall (FR/Lexington, Ky.) and Kindred used an infield single to knock in Helton, bringing the score to 5-4 in favor of the Rams with two innings remaining.
The Bears took the lead for good in the eighth, as Dito again singled to lead off the inning. Marshall added a sacrifice to move a pinch running Matt Dvorscak (SO/Whiting, Ind.) to second, and Mitchell Lendenski (SR/Loveland, Ohio) singled home the run with two outs. Following another error, Vanthournout singled to give the Bears a 6-5 advantage.
SSU played add on in the eighth when JT Boggs (SO/South Shore, Ky.) doubled with one aboard to bring the game to its final score, 7-5.
Brandon Bonar (SR/Chillicothe, Ohio) closed out the game, working around a pair of walks to earn his sixth save of the season. In a bullpen day that featured nine SSU pitchers, Austyn Goodwin (SO/Lexington, Ky.) was credited with his first win of the season, going one inning of relief, allowing no runs, a strikeout and a walk.
Shawnee State is back in action for the final time over the weekend in a three-game set with Georgetown College. Saturday will represent Senior Day for Lendenski, Wilson, Bonar and Austin Hall (SR/Wheelersburg, Ohio) at Branch Rickey Park. Friday features a single game with a 3 p.m. start.
