PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Men's Basketball) – The Shawnee State men's basketball team has added Columbus, Ohio product Tamal Watkins to their 2016-17 signing class, head coach Jeff Hamilton announced Tuesday.
Watkins – a graduate of South High School in Columbus – will join the Bears in 2016-17 following a stellar career with the Bulldogs, earning First Team All-City, First Team All-District and Honorable Mention All-Ohio honors. During his senior season under head coach Ramon Spears, Watkins was named District 10 Player of the Year.
"We are very excited to sign Tamal Watkins out of Columbus South High School," Hamilton said. "He is very good in screen & roll situations because he can shoot behind the screen, force help and find roll guy, or get the ball to the basket and finish. We welcome Tamal into our basketball family and are looking forward to the future!"
Watkins was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs, averaging 12.0 points and 2.9 assists per contest. The 5-foot-9 guard was also a two-year letterwinner in cross country.
"His quickness and play making ability will be an immediate asset for our program," Hamilton said. "He has a very bright future at Shawnee State and will be able to contribute right away."
The son of Troi and Tiffany Watkins, Tamal plans to major in Sports Management as Shawnee State.
