BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Cross Country) – The Bears exhibited a strong opening season performance in the Mid-South Conference Preview meet. Shawnee State University claimed first place overall running a combined 2:17:39 as a team on Saturday afternoon at Phil Moore Park.
For the women, the first five runners to cross the line were all Bears. Anna Havranek (JR/Sugarcreek, Ohio) took the top spot, finishing in 19:11, she averaged a 6:10 mile. Megan Ashton (SR/Proctorville, Ohio) clinched the second spot with her time of 19:15, Brooke Smith (SO/Wheelersburg, Ohio) followed in third at 19:35. Kate Spencer (JR/Glouster, Ohio) (20:03) and Katie Saling (SO/Caldwell, Ohio) (20:10) rounded out the top five. Alyssa Taylor (SO/Georgetown, Ohio) finished in 20:23 to earn seventh place. The young duo of Shaniah Begley (SO/McDermott, Ohio) (21:06) and Jessica Swaim (FR/Lancaster, Ohio) (21:21) finished 10th and 11th. SSU also received strong performances from both Ashley Hackworth (FR/West Union, Ohio) finishing in 22:01 and Darian Steele (SO/Ashland, Ky.), who crossed the line at 23:14.
Adrian Ross (SR/Chillicothe, Ohio) was the first male finisher averaging a 5:24 mile on his way to a 26:51. Parker Blain (JR/Marietta, Ohio) followed in second with a time of 27:12, Cody Redman (JR/Circleville, Ohio) finished in the fourth spot at 27:32. The freshman Steven Adams (FR/Pickaway County, Ohio) collected the first top five finish of his SSU career crossing the line at 27:58. David Jaeger (SO/Liberty Township, Ohio) finished sixth at 28:05 followed by Seth Miller (FR/Ironton, Ohio) who posted a time of 28:16. Other notable finished include Owen Reeher (FR/Kinsman, Ohio) at 28:44, Ryan Stewart at 28:57 and Devon Applegate (FR/Minford, Ohio) who finished his first race as a Bear with a time of 29:01
The team returns to action Friday, September 16th, at the Iona Meet of Champions. The meet will take place in New York.
