Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State men's basketball get Mid-South Conference play rolling on Saturday afternoon when they hit the road to play #19 Pikeville.
The Bears are off to a 5-3 start to the season after winning the Bevo Francis Invitational Tournament, hosted by Rio Grande. The Bears defeated Kent State-Tuscawaras 101-47 on Friday before defeating the hosts Rio Grande 70-64 to claim the tournament championship.
Pikeville are off to a 10-1 start to the season. The Bears defeated #22 Faulkner (Ala.) 69-66 in the final game of the Mid-South Conference/Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge.
Newcomer and Portsmouth native Jayllen Carter (JR/Portsmouth, Ohio) has led the way early for Shawnee State, averaging 15.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per game so far. Tamal Watkins (FR/Columbus, Ohio) has added 14.3 points and 3.6 assists per game, while Frederick Moore (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) is adding 13.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest.
Trey Rakes leads a balanced Pikeville attack, averaging 12.1 points per game. The Bears lead the country in assists, with 165, and in total offensive rebounds, with 461.
Shawnee State holds a 3-18 all-time record against Pikeville. UPike won both meetings last season, winning the first match on February 1st 83-82 in overtime after that game was rescheduled due to inclement weather. Pikeville also won the matchup in Portsmouth, defeating Shawnee State 75-68.
Tipoff between Shawnee State and Pikeville is scheduled for 4:00pm.
