Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State men's basketball gets Mid-South Conference action underway again on Saturday when they host Life University.
The Bears are 7-8 on the season and 0-3 in the MSC. Shawnee State got back in the win column on Monday afternoon by beating Indiana Tech 82-78 behind 19 points from Jayllen Carter (JR/Portsmouth, Ohio).
Life find themselves atop the Mid-South Conference with a 7-8 record and a 3-0 record in the league. The Running Eagles are mired in a four game losing streak, with their last loss coming against Stillman College (Ala.) 80-69.
Jayllen Carter has been the leader for Shawnee State so far. The junior guard from Portsmouth is averaging 14.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Frederick Moore (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) has added 12.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
Shawnee State have been one of the best rebounding teams in the country so far, averaging 30.467 defensive rebounds per game, good for eighth in NAIA Division I. The Bears are also outrebounding opponents by 9.6 per game, good for 11th in the country. The stingy Shawnee State defense is also holding opponents to 39.9% from the field, good for 14th in NAIA Division I. That number is third best in the Mid-South Conference.
SSU and Life split last year's meetings, the first between the two teams all-time. The Running Eagles won on December 5th 72-64, but the Bears got revenge in Portsmouth on February 18th, winning 83-75.
Tipoff between the Bears and Running Eagles is still scheduled for Saturday at 4:00pm. The women's game between Shawnee State and Life has been moved to Sunday at 5:00pm due to inclement weather. Saturday's game is Kids' Day, with games and prizes for kids to be held during the game.
