Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State men's basketball were foiled for the sixth straight game on Tuesday night, falling to Rio Grande 65-59.
The Bears would lead early but would give it up at the 13:54 mark of the first half. Rio Grande would lead for most of the game, pushing the lead to as many as 10 in the second half. A Selby Hind-Wills (FR/Crawley, England) layup would tie the score at 49 with 6:09 to go, but the RedStorm would respond and immediately retake the lead and would close out the game from there.
Frederick Moore (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) was named the recipient of the Dick Hyland Player of the Game for Shawnee State, scoring 16 points and grabbing four rebounds. Jayllen Carter (JR/Portsmouth, Ohio) added 12 for the Bears.
Corey Cruse was the Rio Grande recipient of the Dick Hyland Award, scoring 14 points with five reobunds and two assists for the RedStorm. Will Hill also had 14 for Rio Grande.
With the loss, Shawnee State fall to 7-15 on the season. Rio Grande improve to 11-14.
During the game, Shawnee State accepted donations on behalf of William Carey University in Mississippi. The NAIA member institution suffered heavy damage due to a tornado on their campus. Shawnee State baseball opens the season at William Carey's season opening classic on Friday.
Shawnee State are back in action on Saturday, February 4th when they take on #2 Georgetown at Waller Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00pm.
