Walnut Ridge, Arkansas - Shawnee State baseball split the first two games of their series with Williams Baptist (Ark.) on Friday, winning game one 1-0 in 10 innings before falling in game two 8-2.
Game one would be a pitcher's duel as Derek Moore (SR/Wheelersburg, Ohio) and Layne Ditto would battle through seven scoreless innings. Brady Knittel (JR/West Portsmouth, Ohio) would come in to complete the shutout for Shawnee State with three scoreless innings. The Bears would break the 0-0 tie in the 10th inning when Cameron Reaman (FR/Dayton, Ohio)'s sacrifice squeeze bunt drove in Chase Thurber (SO/Andover, Ohio), who doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Casey Claflin (JR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) sacrifice bunt. The one run would be enough for Knittel to close the game.
Multiple Shawnee State errors in the bottom of the first inning of game two gave Williams Baptist a 2-0 lead. The Eagles would then score one in the second and three in the third to take a 6-0 lead, and Shawnee State would not be able to recover. Thurber would drive in Brandon Reaman (SR/Dayton, Ohio) to start the fourth inning, and Chris Nunez (FR/Sunrise, Florida) would pinch run for Thurber and score on a wild pitch, but SSU could not muster any more offense to fall in game two.
With the split, Shawnee State moves to 2-4 on the season. Williams Baptist are now 3-3.
Shawnee State and Williams Baptist will play again on Saturday with first pitch in game three of the series scheduled for 12:00pm.
