Portsmouth, Ohio – Ashton Lovely (SO/Jamestown, Ohio) was named Mid-South Conference Player of the Week for the first time both this season and in her career on Monday afternoon.
Lovely was the Bears' leading scorer this past week as Shawnee State won a pair of top-20 games to clinch a share of the Mid-South Conference Regular Season Championship, the third in program history. The sophomore guard from Jamestown, Ohio has spent most of the season as a bench player due to injury, after winning MSC Freshman of the Year last season.
Lovely started the week with her second start of the season, this one coming against #2 Lindsey Wilson. Lovely was the best player on the court, scoring 19 points, grabbing three rebounds, dishing out three assists and getting two steals to lead Shawnee State to an 89-73 rout of the Blue Raiders, pulling Shawnee State into a first place tie with Lindsey Wilson for the conference championship.
Lovely started on the bench on Saturday but would again be Shawnee State's leading scorer, getting 18 points in SSU's 72-69 win over #19 Cumberland (Tenn.). Lovely was particularly big late, getting a steal and hitting two free throws with second remaining to seal the victory for Shawnee State and clinch a share of the conference championship, along with the #1 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
The award is the first for Ashton Lovely both this season and in her career, and the fourth for a Shawnee State player this season. Senior center Jonessa Moore (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) captured the other three.
Lovely and the Bears are back in action on Thursday, March 2nd when they open the Mid-South Conference Tournament against #8 seed Life. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00pm.
