Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State women's basketball get the Mid-South Conference Tournament under way on Thursday afternoon when they play #8 seed Life at the Frankfort Convention Center.
Shawnee State are 28-2 on the year, and finished the season 13-1 in the Mid-South Conference to share the regular season championship with Lindsey Wilson. The Bears defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 72-69 last Saturday to clinch the regular season title.
Life are 6-24 on the year, and are 0-14 in the Mid-South Conference in their first season of competition. The Running Eagles fell to Campbellsville 103-65 last Saturday.
Mid-South Conference awards will be handed out on Wednesday evening, and Jonessa Moore (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) stands to be in the running for several of them. The senior center from Cincinnati is leading the conference in scoring, averaging 18.7 points per game while also bringing down 7.5 rebounds per contest. Moore has won three MSC Player of the Week awards and should be in the running for Conference Player of the Year.
Ashton Lovely (SO/Jamestown, Ohio) was also awarded Mid-South Conference Player of the Week for last week's performances. Lovely scored 19 points in Shawnee State's 89-73 drubbing of #2 Lindsey Wilson, and then scored 18 and had a key steal and two free throws to seal the win over Cumberland. Lovely has been injured much of the season, but her resurgence could be a key for Shawnee State.
SSU is also getting double digit points per game from three other players. Madison Ridout (JR/Jackson, Ohio) is averaging 13.0, Brandie Snow (FR/Hartville, Ohio) is adding 12.5 and Bailey Cummins (FR/Brooksville, Kentucky) has chipped in with 11.1.
Life are led by Jacky Jones, who averages 11.8 points per game.
Shawnee State swept the regular season series from Life, and are now 2-0 all-time against the Running Eagles. The Bears won the game in Portsmouth 112-51 on January 7th, and followed that up with a 117-61 win at The Eagles' Nest on February 11th.
Tipoff between the Bears and Running Eagles is set for 2:00pm at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Kentucky. Admission is $12 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. The arena will only take cash due to problems with the ticket computers. The tournament will be broadcast online at this link: http://backlighttv.com/mid-south-conference/.
