Billings, Montana – Shawnee State women's basketball begin their pursuit of a national title on Thursday evening when they play William Woods (Mo.) in the first round of the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship, presented by Wells Fargo.
The Bears enter Thursday with a record of 31-2, including a 13-1 mark in the Mid-South Conference. Shawnee State last played on March 5th, when they defeated Lindsey Wilson 71-65 in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship Game. The Bears were selected as the one seed in the Liston Bracket.
William Woods, the eight seed of the Liston Bracket, are 20-11, and were 16-8 in the American Midwest Conference, where they finished fifth overall. The Owls fell in their last home game, losing to #1 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) 67-57 in the AMC Tournament.
Shawnee State is led in both scoring and rebounding by Jonessa Moore (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio), who averages 18.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Moore, a senior from Cincinnati, was named a Women's Basketball Coaches' Association NAIA All-American on Tuesday night at the tournament banquet.
Madison Ridout (JR/Jackson, Ohio) is next in scoring for the Bears, averaging 13.0 points per game. The freshmen duo of Brandie Snow (FR/Hartville, Ohio) and Bailey Cummins (FR/Brooksville, Kentucky) are also scoring in double digits, with Snow averaging 12.5 points per game, and Cummins adding 11.2.
Jasmine Brown leads William Woods in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Peyton Greenlee is averaging 10.3 points per game, the only other Owls player in double digit scoring.
Thursday's game will be the second meeting between Shawnee State and William Woods all-time, with the previous meeting also being in the first round of the NAIA Division I Tournament. Shawnee State defeated William Woods 68-47 on March 14th, 2012, to hold a 1-0 advantage on Woods.
