Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State baseball earned a doubleheader split with #15 Lindsey Wilson on Saturday afternoon, falling 15-4 in game one but bouncing back to blank the Blue Raiders 5-0 in game two.
Lindsey Wilson would strike fist in game one, scoring three in the top of the first inning, with Jan Carlos Ortiz driving in two on an RBI triple. The Blue Raiders would tack on another run in the top of the third before Shawnee State would get on the board with two in the bottom of the third. Chase Thurber (SO/Andover, Ohio) would drive in Brandon Reaman (SR/Dayton, Ohio) and JT Boggs (JR/South Shore, Ky.) with an RBI double to make the score 4-2.
Lindsey Wilson would get a solo homer from Antonio Dorado to get one run back, and would drive in another on a sac fly to extend the lead back at to four runs, 6-2. Another run would come in the top of the fifth on a sac fly as Shawnee State struggled to get the bats going. The Bears would score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on Blake Marshall (SO/Lexington, Ky.)'s two RBI single, but Lindsey Wilson would score five runs in the top of the eighth to seal the game.
James Doubet would throw 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out eight to get the win for Lindsey Wilson in game one. Derek Moore (SR/Wheelersburg, Ohio) allowed seven runs on 11 hits to get charged with the loss.
Game two would be a different story as Shawnee State would get an excellent outing from Tyler Straley (JR/Uniontown, Ohio), who threw a seven inning complete game, allowing no runs on six hits with four strikeouts. The Bears would get the bats going late on, striking for one run in the fifth and four in the sixth. Blake Marshall would drive home Mike Watson (JR/Niles, Ohio) to give the Bears the lead. The sixth would see RBI singles from Watson and Sam Gerhold (JR/Shelton, Washington), and a dropped fly ball by Jan Carlos Ortiz that would allow Chris Nunez (FR/Sunrise, Florida) to score. Brandon Reaman then hit an RBI single himself one batter later.
Straley's dominant outing would earn him the win. Ricky Winfield threw five innings of one run ball with nine strikeouts but was charged with the loss.
With the split, Shawnee State are now 6-18 on the season, and are 1-3 in the Mid-South Conference. Lindsey Wilson are now 14-12 and are 1-1 in the conference.
The Bears and Blue Raiders play the rubber match of this weekend's series tomorrow at 12:00pm.
