Campbellsville, Ky. – Shawnee State baseball split the final two games of their series with Campbellsville on Friday afternoon, defeating the Tigers 4-3 in game one but falling 1-0 in game two.
The Bears would fall behind early as Campbellsville would score one in the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead. However, the Bears would respond in the top of the third to tie the score. Brady Knittel (JR/West Portsmouth, Ohio) would double to right with the bases loaded, scoring all three runners to tie the game.
Neither team would score until Shawnee State would break through in the top of the seventh. Grant VanLiew (SR/Holt, Mich.) would single to center field to score Mike Watson (JR/Niles, Ohio), giving SSU a 4-3 lead that they would hold.
Joe Spano (FR/Sunrise, Florida) would be credited for the win, throwing two perfect innings to earn his first victory of the season. Jared Welander was credited with a hard-luck loss after allowing the winning run. Brady Knittel would hold the lead late to earn a save.
Game two would be scoreless through six and a half innings as Tyler Straley (JR/Uniontown, Ohio) and Indalecio Romo would be locked in a pitching duel. The Tigers would win on a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh, as Kirby Broadbent would drive in the winning run with a single.
Straley would be hit with a tough loss of his own after allowing only one run in 6.1 innings. Malik Evans would get the win after two innings of scoreless relief.
With the split, Shawnee State moves to 7-21 on the season and are 2-4 in the Mid-South Conference. Campbellsville are now 18-11 and are 6-2 in the league.
Shawnee State return to action on Tuesday, March 28th when they welcome Milligan College to Branch Rickey Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm.
