Lawrenceville, Ga. – Shawnee State baseball fell twice on Saturday, losing to #6 Georgia Gwinnett 7-6 in game one and 7-6 in game two.
Shawnee State would strike first in game one, scoring three runs in the top of the third. Brandon Reaman (SR/Dayton, Ohio) would single with one out, and would reach third when Brady Hamilton dropped JT Boggs (JR/South Shore, Ky.)' dropped fly ball. Reaman would score on Chase Thurber (SO/Andover, Ohio)'s single, and Nick Rose (SO/Olentangy, Ohio) would drive in Boggs one batter later with a single of his own. After a strikeout, Sam Gerhold (JR/Shelton, Washington) would single in Thurber to make it 3-0 Bears.
Georgia Gwinnett would get two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Trevor Bradley would single home Kade Carrigan, and would himself score on Jean Figueroa's single. The Grizzlies would tie the game when Figueroa would come around to score on a single by Marcus McCorkle in the bottom of the seventh, and would take the lead later in the inning on Alex Garland's two-run homer.
The Grizzlies would score two additional runs in the bottom of the eighth, and they would need them as Shawnee State mounted a furious rally in the top of the ninth. Shawnee State would have Joe Loyd (SO/Bidwell, Ohio) on second with two outs when Nick Rose would hit an RBI double. Andrew Dito (SR/Loraine, Ohio) would drive him in one batter later with an RBI double of his own. Sam Gerhold would walk, and Chris Nunez (FR/Sunrise, Florida) would pinch run for him. Casey Claflin (JR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) would then hit an RBI single to drive in Dito, and he and Nunez would advance to second and third on the throw. However, Georgia Gwinnett would make a pitching change, and Tanner Shelton would strike out Blake Marshall (SO/Lexington, Ky.) to end the game.
Michael Royal would allow three runs on three hits and strike out six in three innings of relief to get the win. Brady Knittel (JR/West Portsmouth, Ohio) would allow three runs on four hits in 0.2 innings to get hit with the loss.
Shawnee State would again jump out to an early lead, this time scoring six runs in the first inning. The Bears would load the bases with nobody out before Chase Thurber would drive in Matt Dvorscak (JR/Whiting, Ind.) with an RBI single. Casey Claflin would walk to score Brandon Reaman, and Sam Gerhold would drive in rose with a groundout. Chris Nunez would use his speed to single to short, driving in Thurber and moving Claflin to third. After Nunez stole second and Blake Marshall walked, Georgia Gwinnett would replace starting pitcher Chase Boone with Abram Cartledge. The first batter of the inning would bat again, and Dvorscak would deliver a two RBI double to drive in Claflin and Nunez.
The Grizzlies would begin their comeback in the bottom of the third with three runs. Georgia Gwinnett would load the bases in the first three batters, and Austin Alexander would single home a run to make the score 6-1. Alex Garland would then get the big blow of the inning, getting two RBIs on a single to make the score 6-3.
Shawnee State would hold GGC scoreless from there until the bottom of the ninth. With Joe Spano (FR/Sunrise, Florida) in to pitch, SSU would get a quick out. Deion Sellers would double to get to second, and would advance to third on Alexander's single. Kyle Timmerman would then hit a two-run triple to make the score 6-5. Needing only a run, Jean Paul Rodriguez would get a pinch hit single to drive in Timmerman and tie the game. Shawnee State would escape the inning with no further damage to get to extra innings.
Shawnee State would get a runner to second but would strand him there in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th, Trevor Bradley would lead off with a single and force Chris Moore to bring in Kyle Agius (SR/Riverview, Mich.) to replace Spano. Agius would pick off Bradley for the first out, but would give up consecutive hits to Figueroa and Rodney Tennie. Agius would then struggle with his command, hitting Deion Sellers one batter later and walking in the winning run by delivering four balls to Chris Jones to give Georgia Gwinnett the doubleheader sweep.
Tanner Shelton threw 1.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs on no hits with three strikeouts. Kyle Agius would pitch 0.1 innings, allowing only the winning run to score to take the loss.
With the losses, Shawnee State falls to 8-25 on the season. Georgia Gwinnett improves to 27-12.
Shawnee State baseball will be back in Portsmouth on Tuesday, April 4th when they host Point Park University (Pa.). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
