Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State baseball salvaged one game of their three game series with Pikeville on Sunday, falling in game one 6-1 but winning game two 10-4.
Shawnee State would strike first in game one, grabbing their lone run in the third inning. Nick Rose (SO/Olentangy, Ohio) would be hit by a pitch with two outs, and would reach third when Brandon Reaman (SR/Dayton, Ohio)'s grounder to third was misplayed by Travis Haen. Rose would then score on Chase Thurber (SO/Andover, Ohio)'s single to left.
Jay Vincent would drive in Jorge Perez to tie the game for Pikeville in the sixth, and UPike would put the game out of reach with four runs in the seventh. Haen would make up for his error by getting the big hit of the inning, a two-run single. Perez would then single in a run in the top of the ninth to finish the scoring and help Pikeville cruise to victory.
Dalton Dahley would allow one run on six hits and strike out 12 over seven innings to earn the win. Kyle Warner (JR/Elyria, Ohio) allowed five runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings to take the loss.
Pikeville would score game two's first run on a fielder's choice by Justin Beatty, but Shawnee State would take the lead in the bottom of the first. Chase Thurber would drive in Brandon Reaman on an RBI double, and along with Nick Rose he would score on Sam Gerhold (JR/Shelton, Washington)'s single one batter later to make the score 3-1 SSU.
Brandon Sewell would lead off the third inning for Pikeville with a solo home run, but Shawnee State would again get the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Brady Knittel (JR/West Portsmouth, Ohio) would hit a double play ball to short, but Jorge Perez's throw to first was off-line, allowing Brandon Reaman to score and extend the inning. Blake Marshall (SO/Lexington, Ky.) would then double in Rose, but Knittel was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Pikeville would add two runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 5-4, but the floodgates would open for Shawnee State in the fifth as the Bears scored four to put the game away. Nick Rose would drive in Brandon Reaman with an RBI double. Chase Thurber would then hit a high pop-up to the third base side that would drop in after the Pikeville defenders lost the ball in the sun. Cameron Reaman (FR/Dayton, Ohio) would advance the runners after being hit by a pitch, and Rose would score when Brady Knittel was hit by a pitch as well. Casey Claflin (JR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) would get the big blow, hitting a two-run single to score Thurber and Reaman to make the score 9-4.
Shawnee State would add one insurance run in the sixth. Grant VanLiew (JR/Holt, Mich.) would benefit from the sunny day himself, with a pop-up dropping in left field for a hit. After VanLiew stole second, Chase Thurber would move him to third with a single. Cameron Reaman would then hit an RBI single to drive in VanLiew and end the scoring.
Tyler Straley (JR/Uniontown, Ohio) would get the win after going seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Bryce Carden allowed five runs on five hits in two innings to take the loss.
Shawnee State's record moves to 9-28, and the Bears are 4-8 in the Mid-South Conference. Pikeville move to 19-16, and are 3-9 in the league.
Shawnee State hit the road next Tuesday, April 11th when they travel to Virginia to take on Bluefield College (Va.). First pitch of game one is set for 3:00pm.
