Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State softball split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Ohio Christian 10-0 in five innings in game one and losing 7-6 in game two.
Due to inclement weather in the Portsmouth area, game one was shortened to five innings on agreement by both coaching staffs. The game shortening would matter very little as Shawnee State would rout Ohio Christian 10-0. Tara Duncan (SR/Lancaster, Ohio) would get things started with a two-run double in the bottom of the first.
Shawnee State would then explode for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. Duncan would lead the inning off with a double, and would come around to score on Mackenzie Riley (SO/Proctorville, Ohio)'s single. Riley would advance to third on an error on the play, and would score on Katie Wolsefer (FR/Franklin, Ohio)'s sacrifice fly. Megan Shupert (SO/West Portsmouth, Ohio) would single, steal second, and score on an Ashtyn Saunders (FR/Lancaster, Ohio) single, forcing OCU starter Whitney Fiedler out of the game. Marisa Brown (SO/Liberty Township, Ohio) would drive in two on an RBI double, and Kayla Koch (JR/Lucasville, Ohio) would double home Brown. Mackenzie Riley would then get her second RBI hit of the inning, driving in Koch and Duncan on a single.
Brooke Blevins (FR/Frankfort, Ohio) would throw five scoreless innings to get the win, allowing only five hits and striking out five. Whitney Fiedler would allow seven runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings to take the loss.
Game two would get off to a bad start for Shawnee State as Christine Moyer would hit a three-run homer through the rain to give the Trailblazers a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Shawnee State would hit back for two runs in the bottom of the second, with Katlyn Gleich (SO/Grove City, Ohio) driving in Tara Duncan with a single and Mackenzie Riley scoring on a Madi Phillips (SO/Portsmouth, Ohio) walk.
After OCU added an insurance run in the top of the fifth, Shawnee State would come back to tie the game. Katie Wolsefer would score on a sacrifice fly by Victoria Bevington (FR/London, Ohio), and after a Marisa Brown single loaded the bases, Kayla Koch would drive in a run with an RBI single to make the score 4-4.
Ohio Christian would score three in the top of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead, and that is where the score stood when Shawnee State began a bottom of the seventh rally. Ashtyn Saunders would bunt her way on to start the inning. Marisa Brown would then drive her in with a triple, and pinch runner Haley Rawlins (FR/South Point, Ohio) would score on Kayla Koch's drive that fell short of the wall by only a few feet to be caught for a sacrifice fly. Shawnee State would get the tying run to second after Tara Duncan singled and reached second on a passed ball, but a Riley groundout would end the game.
Whitney Fiedler would avenge the loss she took earlier in the evening by getting the win in game two, allowing two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief work. McKenzie Whittaker (SO/McDermott, Ohio) would allow seven runs on nine hits in six innings to take the loss.
The split moves Shawnee State to 15-16 on the season. Ohio Christian are now 7-25.
