Lebanon, Tenn. – Shawnee State baseball got back on the winning track on Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader from Cumberland (Tenn.) 6-3 in game one and 9-6 in game two in Mid-South Conference action.
The Bears would get off to a fast start in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Brandon Reaman (SR/Dayton, Ohio) would start the game with a leadoff double, and would come around to score on Chase Thurber (SO/Andover, Ohio)'s RBI single two batters later. Thurber would then move to second on Nick Rose (SO/Olentangy, Ohio)'s single, and score on Grant VanLiew (JR/Holt, Mich.)'s RBI single to give Shawnee State a 2-0 lead.
Cumberland would tie the game over the next two innings. Rayden Sierra would hit a home run in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 2-1, and Austin Voeller would hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second to level the score.
Shawnee State would get the lead back in the top of the fifth. After loading the bases, Nick Rose would hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Brandon Reaman. On the same play, Sam Gerhold (JR/Shelton, Washington) would advance to third, and would score when Cumberland catcher Nick Mira would throw wild to third.
Shawnee State would tack on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. With two on, JT Boggs (JR/South Shore, Ky.) would single to left field, driving in Gerhold. Casey Claflin (JR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) would follow that with an RBI single to drive in Nick Rose.
Cumberland would get another run in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run by Kevin Connolly, but their rally would fall short to give Shawnee State the win.
Derek Moore (SR/Wheelersburg, Ohio) would have one of his best outings of the season, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out nine in seven innings to get the win. Curtis Hoppe allowed four runs on five hits in five innings to take the loss.
Cumberland would strike back in the bottom of the first and second to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the first, Austin Krajnak would hit a two run homer to cut the lead to one. Bo Saunders and Hector Morales would then each drive in a run with RBI doubles to give the Phoenix the lead.
Shawnee State would retake the lead with four runs in the top of the third inning. Thurber and Rose would hit one out singles to put two on, and Brady Knittel (JR/West Portsmouth, Ohio) would walk to load the bases. JT Boggs would hit an RBI single one batter later to drive in Thurber and Rose to make the score 5-4. Knittel and Boggs would advance on a wild pitch during Casey Claflin's at bat, and after Claflin struck out Blake Marshall (SO/Lexington, Ky.) would single both of them home to give SSU the 7-4 lead.
Cumberland would rally again for two more runs in the fifth and sixth with solo home runs from Bo Saunders and Austin Voeller, but Shawnee State would hold on to the lead and get a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Brady Knittel would single home Thurber and Matt Dvorscak (JR/Whiting, Ind.) to make the score 9-6, and Shawnee State would hold on for the win.
Tyler Straley (JR/Uniontown, Ohio) would pitch 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and striking out six to get the win. Travis Dohr would allow seven runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings to take the loss. Tyler Arthur (JR/Morehead, Ky.) would throw 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on only one hit to get the save.
The wins improve Shawnee State's record to 13-31 on the year and 6-11 in the Mid-South Conference. Cumberland fall to 23-27, and are also 6-11 in the league.
The Bears and Phoenix will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm Eastern Time with a single game.
