Pittsburgh, Pa. – Shawnee State baseball concluded their regular season with a loss on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Point Park (Pa.) 11-10.
The Bears would strike for four runs in the top of the first. Matt Dvorscak (JR/Whiting, Ind.) would lead off the inning with a walk, and Brandon Reaman (SR/Dayton, Ohio) would walk two batters later to put two on with one out. After a Nick Rose (SO/Olentangy, Ohio) strikeout, Chase Thurber (SO/Andover, Ohio) would walk to load the bases. JT Boggs (JR/South Shore, Ky.) would drive in Dvorscak with a single to keep the bases loaded. Grant VanLiew (JR/Holt, Mich.) would draw the fourth SSU walk of the inning to get Reaman home, and Blake Marshall (SO/Lexington, Ky.) would reach on an error by Addison Domingo, allowing Thurber and Boggs to score.
After three quiet innings, Shawnee State would tack on a run in the top of the fifth. Nick Rose would double off new pitcher Logan Linder to lead off the inning. Rose would advance to third on JT Boggs' one-out grounder to first, and would score one batter later when Grant VanLiew reached on an error by Cole Johnson.
Point Park would roar back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Kyle Agius (SR/Riverview, Mich.) would walk the first two batters of the inning, Zachary Mathias and Stefan Mrkonja, and would hit Cole Johnson with a pitch to load the bases. Agius would walk Erik Montero to drive in Mathias, and would be replaced by James West (SO/Englewood, Ohio). Emmanuel Lopez would then hit a grand slam to tie the game at five.
The Pioneers would then strike for three more runs in the sixth to take the lead. Chris Hernandez would lead off the inning with a single and reach second on a wild pitch by West. Mrkonja would walk, and Tyler Arthur (JR/Morehead, Ky.) would come in to replace West. Cole Johnson would bunt the two runners over, and both runners would score on Montero's single to shallow left field. Lopez would get another RBI hit, driving in Montero with a double to give Point Park an 8-5 lead.
After a scoreless seventh, Shawnee State would re-take the lead with five runs in the top of the eighth. Andrew Dito (SR/Loraine, Ohio) would single to lead off the inning. Sam Gerhold (JR/Shelton, Washington) would walk with one out to put two on, and a single by Brandon Reaman would load the bases. Nick Rose would walk to get pinch runner Logan Knotts (FR/Danville, Indiana) in to score, and after a strikeout JT Boggs would get his second RBI hit of the day, an RBI single to drive in Gerhold and Reaman and get pinch runner Chris Nunez (FR/Sunrise, Florida) to third. Nunez would then score on the play on a wild throw by Cole Horew, with Boggs getting to third. Grant VanLiew would then single off new pitcher Keenan Smith to drive in Boggs and give Shawnee State a 10-8 lead.
That lead would not last through the eighth as Point Park would push across two more runs in the bottom half to tie the score. Cole Johnson would reach on a one-out double, and would reach third on Erik Montero's single to put runners at the corners with one out. Johnson would score on a wild pitch by Brady Knittel (JR/West Portsmouth, Ohio), allowing Montero to also advance to second. Emmanuel Lopez would move Montero to third with a single, and Montero would score on a groundout by Horew to tie the game 10-10.
After a quiet top of the ninth, Point Park would walk off with a run in the bottom half. Daniel Sanchez would triple to lead off the inning, and Yuri Sucart would single to left to end the game.
Nolan Krivijanksi would pitch a scoreless top of the ninth, allowing no runs on only one hit and striking out one to get the win. Brady Knittel would allow three runs on five hits in 1.0+ innings of work to take the loss.
The loss sees Shawnee State end the regular season at 13-33 overall. Point Park improve to 31-17.
Shawnee State get their postseason started on Saturday evening when they play at Cumberlands (Ky.) to start the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament. First pitch on Saturday is set for 7:00pm.
