Portsmouth, Ohio - Shawnee State women's soccer went up against the University of Maine at Kent on Friday afternoon in a match that resulted in 3-3 draw after two periods of overtime.
The first period of action was dominated by the Bengals of UMFK as they would score two goals. In just the third minute Sherifatu Sumaila would score unassisted taking a one goal lead over the Bears. In the 33rd minute, UMFK's Natasha Merangoli would take advantage of a run in the open field scoring a goal and improving the score to 2-0. The Bears would manage five shots on goal in the first half but weren't able to capitalize on the opportunities.
The second half would see yet another Bengals goal in the 66th minute as Sherifatu Sumaila would score her second goal of the game courtesy of an assist from teammate Madison Doucette, making the score 3-0. The Bears quickly fired back, scoring their first goal by way of a Jenny Campbell (SR/Chillicothe, Ohio) penalty kick after a foul by UMFK's Ryane McDevitt. The comeback continued as Shawnee State would score 2 goals in the 73rd minute by way of back-to-back stellar kicks from Charity Collins (SO/Ashland, Kentucky) and Maddie Woodard (SR/Camden, Ohio) to tie the game 3-3.
The two teams fought hard past 90 minutes and the first overtime saw chances to win the game for both teams, UMFK managed two shots, one went wide right and the other declined by an incredible save from SSU's Michaela Garner (JR/Heath, Ohio). Maddie Woodard would manage a shot for the Bears but was rejected by Bengals keeper Valentina Green. In the second overtime, the intensity peaked as both teams managed two shots on goal but neither were able to win the game. Shawnee State looked to have a chance to win it in the last 15 seconds after a corner kick from Jenny Campbell was shot in by Maddie Woodard but was saved by the keeper.
After the draw the Bears move to 1-0-1 on the season. Maine-Fort Kent start the year 0-0-1.
The Bears take the field again at Shawnee Turf on Sunday, September 3rd against Rochester college. Kickoff is set for 3pm.
