Jackson, Ohio – Shawnee State volleyball was handed a pair of losses on Saturday, falling to Point Park (Pa.) 3-0 and Northwestern Ohio 3-0 on day two of the Emileigh Cooper Memorial Tournament.
Shawnee State fell to Point Park 3-0 to start their day at Jackson High School. The Bears trailed the Pioneers the whole way in set one as Point Park built a big early lead to take the set 25-12. Shawnee State would not recover from the set one blowout, falling 25-19 in set two and 25-17 in set three.
Christina Shelton (SR/Blue Creek, Ohio) led Shawnee State in kills with nine for the match, with Carson Roney (SO/Waverly, Ohio) adding eight. Deanna Smith (SR/Riverview, MI) had 23 assists and Brianna Wiget (SR/Piketon, Ohio) added 12 digs.
Game two was closer as Shawnee State pushed Northwestern Ohio, but the Racers would also sweep the Bears 3-0. SSU would trail most of set one en route to a 25-21 loss, but traded points in sets two and three before falling late in both, 25-22 and 26-24. Northwestern Ohio had 15 aces on the Bears to make the difference.
Tyanna Smith (JR/Bowling Green, Ohio) led Shawnee State in kills against UNOH, getting 10. Christina Shelton added nine and Emily McKibben (FR/Williamsburg, Ohio) had eight. Deanna Smith had 31 assists and Brianna Wiget had a season-high 22 digs.
The losses drops Shawnee State's record to 4-4. Point Park are now 5-4, and Northwestern Ohio sit at 10-4 on the year.
Shawnee State is back in action on September 8-9 when they host the Shawnee State Classic.
