Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State volleyball fell twice on Friday, losing to (RV) Union (Ky.) 3-2 and Point Park (Pa.) 3-0 on the first day of the Shawnee State Classic.
SSU would see a good start to Friday by jumping out to a 2-0 lead on Union. SSU would win set one 25-23, holding off the Bulldogs behind a balanced offensive attack. Carson Roney (SO/Waverly, Ohio) led SSU in set one with three kills, and the Bears were aided by nine Union attack errors.
The Bears would also win set two 30-28. Christina Shelton (SR/Blue Creek, Ohio) would get five kills in the set to lead Shawnee State to the extra points win.
However, the third set would be a turning point as Union would rally to win the set 25-17, then would keep up the momentum to take set four 25-20. A back-and-forth deciding set would see Shawnee State attempt a late rally but ultimately fall short to lose the fifth set 15-13.
Christina Shelton would lead Shawnee State with 15 kills in the match. Emily McKibben (FR/Williamsburg, Ohio) added nine, Carson Roney had eight, and Tyanna Smith (JR/Bowling Green, Ohio) had seven. Deanna Smith (SR/Riverview, MI) had 38 assists and Brianna Wiget (SR/Piketon, Ohio) added 20 digs.
Game two for Shawnee State would be a rematch against Point Park, with Friday's match mirroring last Saturday's as the Pioneers swept Shawnee State 3-0. Point Park would jump out early, winning set one 25-17 and set two 25-18. Shawnee State would lead for much of the third set, but a late Point Park rally would see them down the Bears 28-26 in the third set and win the match.
The losses drop Shawnee State to 4-6 on the season.
SSU is back in action tomorrow in day two of the Shawnee State Classic. The Bears play Indiana Tech at 12:00pm and Montreat at 2:00pm.
