Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State volleyball split the final day of the Shawnee State Classic on Saturday, falling to Indiana Tech 3-2 but rallying to defeat Montreat (NC) 3-2.
Game one saw Shawnee State fall behind early to Indiana Tech in a back-and-forth first set, with the Bears falling 25-23. Carson Roney (SO/Waverly, Ohio) would pick up four kills in the set and swing .800, with Tyanna Smith (JR/Bowling Green, Ohio) adding four kills as well. Shawnee State would then win the second set, getting a 25-19 win. SSU benefited from eight Indiana Tech attack errors in the set, with Elaina Davenport (SO/Newark, Ohio), Christina Shelton (SR/Blue Creek, Ohio) and Tyanna Smith all getting three kills apiece.
Indiana Tech would win the third set 25-20, but led 22-8 at one point. Shawnee State fought back to get the set to a more even score. The Bears would use that momentum to force a deciding fifth set, winning game four 25-23.
Game five would see Carson Roney get five kills, but Shawnee State would commit seven errors to fall to Indiana Tech 15-9.
SSU's second match of the day would start much as the first did as Montreat jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-20 win in set one. Courtney Glover and Jazzy Larson each had five kills, and SSU committed three service errors in the set. However, as in the first match SSU would rally to win set two 25-22 behind five Tyanna Smith kills.
SSU then took a 2-1 match lead by winning the third set 25-21. Tyanna Smith was again active, getting seven kills. The Cavaliers would respond with an excellent fourth set, winning 25-19.
Again driven to five sets, Shawnee State would come out on top in the fifth 15-12. Smith and Christina Shelton each had three kills to put Montreat on the brink, with the match ending on a set error by Montreat's Hannah Wyngarden.
The Saturday split moves Shawnee State's record on the year to 5-7.
Shawnee State are back in action next Friday when they begin Homecoming Weekend with their Mid-South Conference opener against Lindsey Wilson. Game time is set for 5:00pm.
