Portsmouth, Ohio – Michaela Garner (JR/Heath, Ohio) was named Mid-South Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Garner was the key cog in Shawnee State's 1-0 double overtime win over Bob Jones (SC) on Saturday, making nine key saves to preserve the tie through the end of regulation. Garner's play enabled Shawnee State's Olivia Ball (SO/Greenup, Kentucky) to get the game-winning goal in the second overtime to clinch the victory.
Garner's outstanding game over the weekend is nothing new, with the junior keeper having been instrumental in Shawnee State's 4-1-1 start to the season. Garner has also preserved 1-0 leads in SSU's opening win over Union (Ky.), and against Asbury (Ky.) last weekend.
The award is Garner's second of her career, and the first Player of the Week award won by a Shawnee State player since Garner won Defensive Player of the Week on October 17, 2016.
Shawnee State women's soccer returns to action on Tuesday, September 19 when they host Cincinnati Christian. Kickoff is set for 5:00pm.
