Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State men's soccer tried to rally on Tuesday evening but fell to Bluefield (Va.) 4-2.
The Rams were immediately ahead 47 seconds into the match as Joao Delgado would fire home on Abel Bogale's pass to put Bluefield 1-0. BC would keep up the pressure and break through again in the 12th minute, as Duarte Ferreira would nod home from a Sandro Stalder corner to put the Rams up 2-0. Shawnee State would get a chance through Bryce Romanello (SO/Lucasville, Ohio), but nothing further in the half. The toothless Shawnee attack would come back to haunt the Bears as Delgado fired in his second in the 31st minute to give Bluefield a 3-0 halftime lead.
Shawnee State would settle into the match against a rotated Bluefield side in the second half, eventually rallying to within one goal. Caspar Nolte (JR/Germantown, Ohio) would attack a Andrew Nimely (JR/Groveport, Ohio) cross with his head, scoring SSU's first to cut the lead to 3-1. Only 20 seconds later, the same duo would strike again as Nimely's through ball to Nolte would find him with space in the box, and the veteran winger would finish to cut the lead to one goal.
The Bears' attack would continue, but ultimately be foiled as Bluefield would add a fourth. Delgado would find the net a third time in the light rain to give the Rams the final 4-2 margin, despite SSU's continued pressure.
The loss drops Shawnee State to 0-8-0 on the season. Bluefield remains perfect at 9-0-0 on the new year.
Shawnee State returns to action on Saturday, September 23 when they travel to Midway (Ky.) for the first time in program history. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 3:00pm.
