Campbellsville, Ky. – Shawnee State volleyball dropped their second straight on Saturday afternoon, falling to (RV) Campbellsville 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-20).
Campbellsville would take an early 6-1 lead in the first set, and would not allow the Bears to get closer than five points for the rest of the game, winning set one 25-15. SSU swung poorly in the first set, getting nine kills and 10 errors for a hitting percentage of -.026.
The second set would go much better for Shawnee State as the Bears would stay competitive in the second game. SSU would race out to a 7-2 lead in the set. However, with the score 8-3, Campbellsville would rally to seven of the next eight points to take the lead. The game would trade points until a three point rally would see SSU retake a 19-18 lead. The even set would continue, with Campbellsville outlasting SSU to take the second set 26-24 with a late rally.
The third set would start with the two teams trading points before three straight points for Shawnee State would give the Bears a 9-6 lead. Campbellsville would immediately rally to take an 11-10 lead, with the two teams trading points down the stretch. A late four point rally would put Campbellsville up for good, giving the Tigers a 25-20 set win and a match victory.
Christina Shelton (SR/Blue Creek, Ohio) led SSU with 11 kills in the match. Deanna Smith (SR/Riverview, MI) had 25 assists, and Stacia Martin (SR/Indianapolis, Indiana) had a team-high 16 digs. Maria Coelho led Campbellsville with a match-high 16 kills.
The loss drops Shawnee State to 6-10 on the year, and 1-3 in the Mid-South Conference. Campbellsville improves to 10-2, and 3-2 in the league.
Shawnee State returns to action on Tuesday, September 26 when they hit the road to take on Georgetown. First serve is set for 7:00pm.
