PORTSMOUTH – Shawnee State Athletic Director Jeff Hamilton has announced that Rob Appell has been named the head coach of women's tennis. Appell is a name familiar to Shawnee State followers as he is entering his seventh season as women's soccer coach this fall. With his newly appointed dual head coaching positions, Appell is the only current coach in the Mid-South Conference to be head coach of two distinct sport programs outside of schools that have the same cross country and track & field coach.

"Being a Shawnee State graduate, Rob truly understands the culture of Shawnee State Athletics," explained Hamilton. "Ever since becoming the head coach of the women's soccer team, Rob has taken that program to new heights both on the playing field and in the classroom. I am confident that under his leadership our tennis team will have similar success in the coming years."

"First of all, I would like to thank Jeff for giving me this opportunity," said coach Appell. "I am very honored to have been selected to lead the tennis team at Shawnee State. Becoming a head coach at my alma mater has been a tremendous honor and I am ready to get started in this new position."

Serving as a coach for two different programs is something that Appell has become accustomed to as he has also served as an assistant on the softball team for the past six seasons. A 2004 graduate of Shawnee State, Appell was an assistant on both the men's and women's soccer teams from 2004-05. He has been the head coach of the women's soccer team since the 2006 season. During that time, he has coached 26 all-conference, eight NAIA all-region and 10 NAIA scholar athletes.
