PORTSMOUTH – Women's tennis won three of the seven matches that it was able to officially contest on Friday afternoon, but walkover losses at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles would prove costly in the team's 6-3 loss to Midway. Shelbie Wulfekamp was the team's double winner on the day playing at No. 2 doubles (with Kyra Keeton) and No. 4 singles. Ashley Fischer would also win her match at No. 3 singles for team's final win.
With the No. 3 doubles match already secured with the walkover in hand, Midway took a 2-0 lead after its win at No. 1 doubles. Team Ashley (Ashley O'Neill and Fischer) moved up to played their first match of the fall season at No. 1. Unaffected by the move to the top position, the duo played their No. 1 counterparts right to the wire before being edged out, 8-6.
Playing at No. 2, Keeton and Wulfekamp picked up their first official collegiate win of the fall season with a 9-7 victory. With the match tied at seven-all, SSU's second pairing dug deep to hold serve and break during the final two games, coming away with the win. Keeton and Wulfekamp were no strangers to winning though as they advanced to the finals of the Steven A. Hunter Tournament earlier this fall in exhibition play.
With another walkover win at No. 6 singles, Midway took the equivalent of a 3-1 lead into singles. Fischer would make quick work of her opponent at No. 3 as she allowed just a single game in the opening set and won six-love in the second to bring the match to 3-2. At No. 5, Aubrey Johnson – who was making the transition from the soccer pitch to the tennis courts – held a 4-3 lead in her match before dropping the opening set. In her second set, she fell behind early, 5-0, and was unable to climb out of the early hole.
Midway would then seal the win when the Alieva sisters both turned in victories at the top two singles positions. Wulfekamp would wrap up SSU's fall season with a win at No. 4. After closing out a 6-4 first set victory, her opponent was forced to retire and the Bears' No. 4 came away with win.
Tennis will now be away from competition until the spring where the Bears will play the majority of their matches. The spring schedule has yet to be released.
