PORTSMOUTH – Shawnee State Athletics was recently recognized as one of 221 NAIA institutions to be named a Five-Star Institution for the 2011-12 season. SSU received a score of 89 (out of a possible 100). Points are earned in five key areas: character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.
With that rating, the Bears led the way in the Mid-South with the conference's highest rating. As a conference, the Mid-South also earned Five-Star distinction with 11 of the 12 members earning the Five-Star rating. Of the 221 member institutions, Shawnee State's score was tied for the sixth-highest in the country. The Bears just missed a top-five rating behind Montana Tech (100), Carroll (96), Paul Quinn (91), St. Francis (Ind.) (91), and Xavier (La) (91).
