WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Men's Basketball outscored the Bulldogs of Wilberforce University 48-25 in the second half, helping it come out on top 80-57. The Bears' (10-7) win was their final road non-conference meeting of the season. They are now 4-4 in non-conference games this season.
Tyler Morgan finished with a double-double, contributing a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ian Nixson added 16 points and four rebounds. Jeremy Bennington led all scorers off the bench with 16 points, helping the Bears score 31 bench points.
The Bulldogs (3-14) jumped out to a quick 10-6 lead in the first five minutes of action, making two 3-pointers. However, Bennington made back-to-back treys and gave Shawnee State a 12-10 lead with 12:39 left in the first half.
Wilberforce's Rachaun Thompson hit another 3-pointer for the Bulldogs giving them a 15-12 lead. It was part of six 3-pointers Wilberforce made in the first half, accounting for 56 percent of their offense.
With 8:46 left in the half, Tyler Boyles made two free throws to give the Bears a 16-15 lead. On the subsequent possession, Morgan hit a 3-pointer which handed the Bears a 19-15 lead. Then it was Nixson, who reeled off seven straight points during a 12-4 run, giving SSU a 28-19 lead.
Wilberforce responded quickly, hitting two 3-pointers in the final minute, helping the Bulldogs head into halftime tied 32-32 with the Bears.
Nixson set the tone early for the Bears in the second half. After jumping out to a quick 39-38 lead, Nixson nailed a 3-pointer in the corner. On the following possession, Boyles followed Nixson's lead and hit another 3-pointer, giving the Bears a 45-40 lead with 15:22 remaining in the game.
From that point forward, Shawnee State did not allow the Bulldogs to make another field goal for the next 8:17. The dry spell for Wilberforce allowed the Bears to go on a key 15-0 run, extending the Bears' lead to 60-40.
Wilberforce could not recover from the scoreless drought, as the Bears did not allow the Bulldogs to get any closer than 14 down the stretch with the Bears leading 60-46 midway through the second half.
Shawnee State held Wilberforce to 18-percent (7-of-39) shooting in the second half and 29-percent shooting overall. The Bulldogs, who made six 3-pointers in the first half, were 0-of-13 shooting in the second half from beyond the arc.
The Bears outscored Wilberforce 32-14 in the paint and 31-22 from the bench. They shot 45-percent overall for the game and made 16-of-27 free throws. Wilberforce made 10-of-17. Sean Cassidy led the Bulldogs with 12 points.
Shawnee State has 12 remaining games, 11 which are against conference opponents. The Bears start a key three-game home stretch starting this Saturday against Bluefield College, marking Shawnee State's 2013 Homecoming game. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
