PORTSMOUTH – Men's cross country and track & field has announced its first signee set to join the team in the fall of 2013 as Georgetown High School's Nick McAfee has signed his Letter Intent with Shawnee State. McAfee is a two-time All-Ohio performer and three-time state qualifier in cross country.
"We look for Nick to have an immediate impact on our team and make our top seven right out of the gate," stated head Coach Eric Putnam. "He has been extremely well coached by (high school coach) Chad Sexton and I feel like we can build on what Chad and Nick have done to try to get him to the next level."
During this past fall, McAfee turned in his best finish at the Division III Ohio State Championship as he placed 10th with a time of 15:59. He placed 26th in the state as a junior and was 51st as a sophomore. He was a four-time All-League selection in cross country and a three-time league Runner of the Year selection during each season he qualified for states.
In track, McAfee placed eighth in the 1,600-meter run during the state meet last season, earning all-state honors. He was a regional qualifier during both his sophomore and junior seasons on the track. He lettered all four years in cross country and track & field at Georgetown High School and was a captain on both of those teams.
He will join a Bears squad that finished seventh at the NAIA Championships this past fall after capturing their third consecutive Mid-South Conference title. The Bears will return each of their top-five finishers from that seventh place performance at NAIA Meet, including NAIA All-American Adam Schroeder and MSC Runner of the Year Brad Liston.
