WISE, Va. – A three-set win from Ashley Fischer secured tennis' lone point in the match at UVA-Wise. Outside of that match, the host Cavaliers controlled the play en route to an 8-1 victory on their home courts.
Fischer's singles victories came at her usual No. 3 position and improved her record to 6-2 overall this season. Looking at just her spring results, she has gone a combined 4-1 to open up the Mid-South schedule.
She took her opening set 6-4 to start the day but after she and her opponent were tied at five-all in the second set, the Cavalier took the final two games of that set to force a 10-point tiebreak in the third. The tiebreak was the first that Fischer was forced to play this year but she rebound nicely from the setback in the second set to claim the match with a 10-7 victory in that tiebreak.
In doubles, the Bears closest pairing to victory came at No. 3 with Shelbie Wulfekamp and Kyra Keeton who would eventually fall 8-5. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams would both pick up three games before falling short.
In singles, Wulfekamp and Kayla Wiley each won three games total in their matches at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. At No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6, the Bears took just one game over the course of those matches.
Tennis is currently in the midst of a three-day road trip across the Mid-South Conference. On Sunday, the team will head to No. 16 Cumberland University for a 2 p.m. match.
