Gregg Smith served as an assistant coach for the Shawnee State women's basketball program for 27 years alongside his wife and then head coach Robin Hagen-Smith before retiring from coaching after the 2012-13 season. During his tenure, Smith was a part of all 638 victories that Shawnee State has accumulated since joining the NAIA. He began his coaching career during the 1987-88 season when Shawnee State was still a two-year school.
During the 1998-99 season, Smith helped lead Shawnee State to the ultimate achievement as it won the NAIA Championship. Shawnee State nearly repeated that feat again during the 2009-10 season when it again advanced to the NAIA Championship, finishing as the runner-up at the national tournament. Women's basketball has made 18 of the last 20 NAIA tournaments under his watch.
Smith was inducted into the Shawnee State Hall of Fame in 2007.
